Rochdale Sub-Aqua Club

Rochdale Sub-Aqua Club (RSAC) was formed in 1958 and is therefore one of the oldest clubs in the country. We are members of the Sub-Aqua Association (SAA), club number 92. Training for members (minimum age 16) is given to a higher, than usual standard at Rochdale Central Baths on Wednesday nights between 8:00p.m. and 9:30p.m. We have equipment available for use during pool training.

Friday night is club night at Hollingworth Lake Rowing Club (H.L.R.C.) with lectures (essential for your training) followed by a social gathering. We are social members of the club. A wide variety of social activities are organised to involve family and friends.

The club organises dives throughout the British Isles for day trips, weekends and week long holidays. In recent years trips have been organised to Cornwall, Devon, Oban, Ireland (north and South), Cumbrae, Scapa Flow, Dunbar, Outer Hebrides, Normandy, North Wales and Anglesey. In addition our members have dived all over the world. We have our own boats and engines, which reduces the cost of most dives to the cost of petrol.

Membership subscriptions for the first year amount to £137 (£92 to RSAC, £12 to HLRC and £33 to SAA for insurance and a qualification record file) After the first year the subscription is reduced to £85. Students and the unemployed pay reduced fees.

It will be necessary for you to obtain a medical before diving in open water. The club will help in arranging this for you. A diving manual is included in the first years subscription.

We have found in the past that some people who start their diver training find that they do not wish to continue. We therefore do not ask you to pay subscriptions straight away, but allow one session when prospective recruits are given an opportunity on an aqua-lung, followed by 6 weeks start of training. During this time people can decide if they are right for the sport and vice-versa. For this period of time we ask the trainees to pay £6.50 per session (£5 subscription plus £1.50 pool fee). After the first six sessions, trainees will be asked to join the club (they may join before this if they wish). If the trainee becomes a club member, then the £5 per session already paid will be deducted from the amount due. If, however, trainees decide not to become members they have paid a small cost for the experience, expenses and time given by the club.
