Capenwray

Capenwray is a quarry just past Lancaster and about 3 minutes off the M6, junction 35.

As dive sites go it is probably the nearest, but by no means the best, there is a dive shop with air on tap, toilets and a Burger van. It is not free to get in but a mere £4.00.But one winter we had to pour hot water out, of our flasks onto Dave Yates backside, because it had frozen to the concrete slab he was sat on, £4.00 seemed extortionate.

Now looking back we should have charged him for the hot water.

Anyway there is car parking and easy access to the water, with a maximum depth of 20m if you stick your depth gauge into the mud, it is quite an easy dive site as they go. There is plenty to see with wrecks littering the quarry floor. And at least four types of fish.

The viz is normally good if you are first in, but can get quite bad when it gets busy, but when the weather is too bad to dive in the sea Capenwray is still not all that good, but is probably the nearest place you can dive, and ideal for trying new equipment and training.
